Aldeen Celebrates 25 Years
Norris Aldeen had a dream of providing a championship-quality golf course in his hometown of Rockford, Illinois. It had to be challenging, affordable, and available to everyone. On July 26, 1991, the back nine holes of Aldeen Golf Club, 1902 Reid Farm Road, Rockford, which was the Rockford Park District’s fifth public golf course, opened along with the Aldeen Practice Centre. Twenty-five years later, his dream is still having a major impact on the community, especially golfers. At the grand opening of Aldeen Golf Club on April 10, 1992, Norris Aldeen stated, “Fifty years from now, when I open one of the windows of heaven, I’ll look down, and this golf course will be here. And I’m confident this course will be more beautiful and challenging than it is today.”
Norris Aldeen was a passionate golfer with a generous heart, who loved his community and had a vision for his farmland. He and his wife approached the Rockford Park District in 1988 with the offer of providing the property – which was a then soybean field – on which the Aldeen Golf Club now exists. They also provided the seed money to help the District build the course. “His vision for this course was grand and it came true because he was a practical guy. He was able to finance getting it started, which is where some visions fall short, and he involved the right people,” said Bill Aldeen, son of Norris Aldeen.
Today family, friends, and special guests gathered to celebrate the past 25 years and look forward to the future. “The success of Aldeen Golf Club over the past 25 years might be judged by the over 600,000 rounds of golf that have been played here, or by the over 6,000 people who visited the Aldeen Practice Centre. Aldeen Golf Club means something different to each person who comes to the course,” said Duncan Geddes, Director of Golf Operations. During today’s ceremony, a new logo was unveiled as part of an effort to rebrand and modernize the image of Aldeen Golf Club. The new branding, 25 year campaign, graphics, concept, and design were completed by LarsonGroupDesign Company and paid for by the Aldeen Foundation. Many new signs were transformed today to reflect the new logo and a special memory wall was unveiled inside Aldeen Golf Course Clubhouse.
